RV Insurance in Ontario
Recreational vehicles (RVs) represent a unique combination of travel freedom and comfort, offering homeowners and adventurers the ability to explore the open road while enjoying the comforts of home. However, along with the joys of RV ownership comes the responsibility of protecting your investment. This is where RV insurance comes into play.
Whether you’re a part-time traveller or a full-time RV enthusiast, having the right insurance coverage is essential to protect your vehicle, belongings, and peace of mind. RV insurance in Ontario is designed to meet the specific needs of recreational vehicle owners, addressing risks such as accidents, theft, liability, and damage caused by natural events.
For residents of Ontario, understanding the nuances of recreational vehicle insurance is crucial. From legal compliance to ensuring adequate financial protection, RV insurance is an important safeguard for any road trip or camping adventure. Duliban Insurance Brokers specializes in helping Ontario residents navigate the complexities of RV insurance, offering customized solutions to meet their unique needs.
What is RV Insurance?
RV insurance is a specialized form of coverage designed specifically for recreational vehicles. Unlike standard auto insurance, RV insurance provides broader protection that caters to the unique features of motorhomes and trailers. Since an RV functions as both a vehicle and a home on wheels, policies typically include elements of both vehicle insurance and homeowner’s insurance.
Types of Recreational Vehicles Covered
- Class A Motorhomes: Luxury RVs built on a bus or truck chassis.
- Class B Motorhomes: Compact camper vans with basic living amenities.
- Class C Motorhomes: Mid-sized RVs that combine comfort and functionality.
- Travel Trailers and Fifth-Wheel Trailers: Non-motorized RVs that require towing.
- Truck Campers and Pop-Up Trailers: Smaller, lightweight options ideal for casual travellers.
What Does RV Insurance Cover?
RV insurance generally includes a range of coverage options, such as:
- Liability Coverage: This covers damages or injuries you may cause to others while using your RV.
- Collision Coverage: Pays for repairs to your RV if it’s damaged in an accident.
- Comprehensive Coverage: Protects against theft, fire, vandalism, or natural disasters.
- Personal Property Coverage: Covers personal belongings stored inside the RV.
- Vacation Liability Coverage: Protects if someone is injured at your campsite.
This comprehensive approach ensures that your vehicle and personal assets are protected, no matter where your travels take you.
Why Choose RV Insurance in Ontario?
Legal Requirements for RV Insurance in Ontario
In Ontario, RVs must have at least the same minimum liability coverage required for standard vehicles.
Challenges Specific to RV Owners in Ontario
- Weather-Related Risks: Ontario’s harsh winters and unpredictable weather can lead to issues like water damage, freezing pipes, and roof leaks in your RV.
- Road Conditions: With a mix of urban highways and rural roads, Ontario presents diverse challenges for RV drivers. Adequate insurance ensures you’re prepared for any eventuality.
- Travel-Specific Concerns: Many Ontario RV owners travel across borders or stay in campgrounds for extended periods. Proper insurance ensures coverage beyond Ontario’s boundaries.
By securing a robust RV insurance policy, you can enjoy peace of mind whether you’re exploring provincial parks or venturing into neighbouring provinces.
Types of RV Insurance Coverage Available
When it comes to RV insurance in Ontario, policies can be customized based on your specific needs.
Liability Coverage
- Protects you if you’re at fault in an accident that causes injury or property damage to others.
- Often includes higher coverage limits due to the size and weight of RVs, which can cause significant damage.
Collision Coverage
- Pays for damages to your RV caused by a collision, regardless of who is at fault.
- Ideal for safeguarding your investment, especially for newer or more expensive RVs.
Comprehensive Coverage
Covers damages caused by non-collision-related incidents, such as:
- Fire
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Weather-related events (hail, floods, etc.)
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Protects you if you’re involved in an accident with a driver who has little or no insurance.
Vacation Liability Coverage
- Provides coverage for incidents that occur while your RV is parked at a campsite.
- Useful for part-time RV users or seasonal travellers.
Personal Belongings Coverage
Covers personal items stored in your RV, such as electronics, clothing, and kitchen appliances.
Emergency Expenses Coverage
Reimburses you for temporary living expenses if your RV becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event.
Roadside Assistance
Offers towing, flat tire repair, battery jump-starts, and other services to keep you on the road.
Trailer Insurance in Ontario
For those who own trailers, having a separate trailer insurance policy is essential. Unlike motorized RVs, trailers require coverage specific to their function and design.
Why Trailers Need Separate Coverage?
Trailers are not motorized, meaning they rely on a towing vehicle. Coverage for damages or liability often isn’t included in the policy for the towing vehicle.
Common types of trailers covered:
- Fifth-Wheel Trailers
- Travel Trailers
- Utility Trailers
Importance of Getting a Trailer Insurance Quote
By obtaining a trailer insurance quote in Ontario, you can ensure your policy is customized to your specific needs, offering financial protection against unexpected events like theft or accidents.

Getting an RV Insurance Quote in Ontario
Obtaining an RV insurance quote in Ontario is essential in protecting your recreational vehicle while staying within your budget. The process involves assessing your unique needs, understanding coverage options, and comparing rates from different providers.
Factors That Affect RV Insurance Premiums
- Type and Class of RV: Larger and more expensive RVs, such as Class A motorhomes, generally have higher premiums than smaller models or trailers.
- Usage Frequency: Policies for full-time RV users will differ from those who only use their RVs seasonally.
- Storage Location: Storing your RV in a secure facility during the off-season can help reduce premiums.
- Driving History: A clean driving record can positively impact your insurance costs.
- Additional Coverage Options: Adding optional coverage, such as roadside assistance or personal belongings protection, will increase your premium.
- Deductibles: Choosing a higher deductible can lower your monthly premiums but increase out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a claim.
How to Get the Right Quote?
- Work with an RV Insurance Broker: An RV insurance broker like Duliban Insurance Brokers simplifies the process by comparing policies from multiple providers.
- Be Specific About Your Needs: Clearly communicate your usage patterns, storage plans, and any unique coverage requirements.
- Bundle Policies: Consider bundling RV insurance with other policies, such as home or auto insurance, to take advantage of discounts.
By working with a trusted broker, you can ensure your RV insurance quote aligns with your specific needs while staying cost-effective.
Tips for Saving on RV Insurance
Insurance premiums can add up quickly, especially for larger or more expensive RVs. However, there are several strategies you can use to reduce costs while maintaining adequate coverage.
Shop Around
Comparing quotes from multiple insurers is one of the most effective ways to save on RV insurance in Ontario. Brokers like Duliban Insurance Brokers can help you find the best deals by evaluating different policies.
Bundle Your Policies
Many insurance providers offer discounts for bundling multiple policies, such as RV, home, and auto insurance.
Choose the Right Coverage Limits
While it’s important to have sufficient coverage, avoid over-insuring your RV. Work with a broker to determine the right limits for your needs.
Increase Your Deductible
Opting for a higher deductible can lower your monthly premiums, though it’s important to ensure you can cover the deductible in case of a claim.
Maintain a Clean Driving Record
Safe driving not only protects you on the road but also qualifies you for better insurance rates over time.
Install Safety Features
Adding features such as an anti-theft system, smoke detectors, or GPS tracking can lead to discounts on your policy.
By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce the cost of insuring your RV without sacrificing the quality of coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, asked and answered by our team.
For a motorhome, tent trailer or utility trailer, coverage is best added to your auto policy. Travel trailers, park models, campers and mobile homes will be added to your home or auto policy, depending on whether you remain parked or travel to different vacation spots.
No, you do not require a different license. A standard G license can operate any RV under 4500 kg’s in weight and size. If the trailer has air brakes or exceeds this weight, a different license is required.
If you need to file a claim on your RV insurance, simply contact your insurer to report the incident. They’ll guide you through the steps of the claim process. If you’re unsure or need assistance, Duliban Insurance Brokers can help ensure the process goes smoothly.
A good rule of thumb is to calculate your bill of sale, plus any enhancements that you’ve since added to your trailer. If your unit is 0-10 years in age (new trailer or fifth wheel) or 0-15 years in age (park model) you have the option to insure it for the replacement cost of a new unit.
Your car insurance may offer liability coverage for your trailer, but this is likely to apply only when your trailer is hitched to your car. Any physical damages, theft or vandalism to the structure itself or its contents may not be covered. For this, you will need to purchase separate travel trailer insurance.
Extra coverage might be necessary if you frequently use your RV for travel, have expensive equipment inside, or live in your RV for extended periods. A recreation vehicle insurance broker like Duliban can review your specific situation and help you determine if additional coverage is right for you.
