For a motorhome, tent trailer or utility trailer, coverage is best added to your auto policy. Travel trailers, park models, campers and mobile homes will be added to your home or auto policy, depending on whether you remain parked or travel to different vacation spots.
No, you do not require a different license. A standard G license can operate any RV under 4500 kg’s in weight and size. If the trailer has air brakes or exceeds this weight, a different license is required.
A good rule of thumb is to calculate your bill of sale, plus any enhancements that you’ve since added to your trailer. If your unit is 0-10 years in age (new trailer or fifth wheel) or 0-15 years in age (park model) you have the option to insure it for the replacement cost of a new unit.
Your car insurance may offer liability coverage for your trailer, but this is likely to apply only when your trailer is hitched to your car. Any physical damages, theft or vandalism to the structure itself or its contents may not be covered. For this, you will need to purchase separate travel trailer insurance.
