Thinking of Driving for Uber? Read This First

Uber is the newest ride sharing service that has hit the Niagara region and taken it by storm. Tons of people are learning about this new way to make extra money and joining as drivers.

Automobile insurance Brokers insurance companies alike, in Ontario are still learning about this rising industry, and the issues that arise when it comes to drivers and their insurance. As a result, it can be tricky when you’re trying to navigate insurance as an Uber driver.

With the right information, you can easily figure out if this is the right move for you. Read on to learn about the details before you make a decision.

Uber vs. Your Insurance

The taxi service industry has many flaws that customers are usually quick to complain about. Common complaints are that there aren’t enough cars available on a busy Friday or Saturday night, it’s too expensive, or sometimes service takes too long.

This is where Uber steps in. If you have extra time and the desire to make some extra cash, you’re probably tempted to join Uber as a driver.

The demand for ride sharing service is growing as it has proven to be more convenient than traditional taxis, while combatting the illegal taxi industry at the same time.

Talk to your hometown broker at Duliban Insurance Brokers before you dive into the industry. We’ll make sure you’ll be covered properly.

Here’s all the information you need to know before you get started.

What is Uber?

Uber is the newest revolution in transportation. It’s a ride sharing app that lets customers order a car and pay by credit card through the app.

Customers who are looking for a ride sign up for an account with Uber, and it connects them using a GPS to a local driver in their area. An interactive map feature shows the user exactly where the car is as it travels toward them, with a countdown time for when they can expect their ride to arrive.

The appeal of Uber to users is the personal element that it includes. They can text their driver, see pictures of them, and learn their name. They can also send a message to the driver as well as give them a review at the end.

At the end of the ride, Uber bills the customer’s credit card.

It began in 2009 as a car service in California, but expanded to a ride sharing service in 2013. Since it’s such a new concept and ride sharing in general is a new concept, it’s raised many concerns with city officials as to the legal issues surrounding the service.

Uber vs. Car Insurance

Most insurance companies in Ontario are staying far away from being involved with Uber drivers. The concern for these insurance companies pertains to the injuries that can occur resulting from an accident to any passenger within the vehicle.

In fact, the majority of insurance companies want absolutely nothing to do with it.

Over half of the Ontario Uber vehicles on the road currently are not insured properly. In addition, passengers might not be covered for any injuries or accidents that happen during the ride.

As a result, the legitimacy and legality of the company has been under scrutiny.

There are currently about 190 Uber drivers in the Niagara Region, and only about 98 of them have proper insurance. That means that only about half of the Uber drivers on the road are actually insured to drive customers for profit.

In April 2016, Niagara Regional Police arrested 20 Uber drivers for operating either without a license or without proper insurance.
